The Chicago Teacher Residency (CTR) is a one-year teacher training program for talented professionals who passionately believe that all students deserve a quality education. Individuals who join the program receive a scholarship to obtain a master’s degree from DePaul University and obtain in-classroom experience with guidance from expert coaches and mentors. Upon completion of the one-year program, individuals are fully licensed to teach in Illinois, and be placed in a full-time teaching position in Chicago Public Schools.

The Girl Scouts GCNWI is seeking support from 5 AmeriCorps State and National members to provide mental health, physical health, and financial literacy educational support to grossly underserved communities in the city of Chicago. The Girl Scouts Live Well Initiative (GSLWI) will focus on mental health, financial health, physical health, and self-discovery health (S.T.E.A.M Curriculum) for the girls who need it most. At the end of the first program year, the AmeriCorps members will be responsible for assisting Girl Scouts GCNWI to alleviate poverty by expanding health education while prioritizing investment in the most underserved individuals and communities in Chicago.

The Kankakee County State’s Attorney’s Office utilizes AmeriCorps members and volunteers to serve in the JUMP for Kankakee County Kids one-to-one juvenile mentoring and job readiness program. JUMP partners community leaders and professionals with court-involved teenage youth at risk of academic failure, truancy or involvement in delinquent activities in Kankakee County, Illinois. AmeriCorps members and volunteers will be responsible for reducing truancy rates and increasing educational scores among the service population, while also placing mentees into full and part-time employment and internship opportunities. AmeriCorps members and volunteers will be engaged in mentoring of the target service population, program oversight, attending mentee’s court dates and providing regular updates/reports to the juvenile’s judge and/or courtroom advocates.

The VOCAL program places full, half, quarter, and minimum-time AmeriCorps members in adult literacy programs at community-based nonprofits and local government agencies, including through our Jump Start Program that recruits retired teachers, the Illinois Youth Centers in Chicago and Warrenville. Additionally, the program promotes volunteerism and education by recruiting high-school seniors to serve as VOCAL AmeriCorps members, committing to serve at-risk youth and adult ESL learners while earning their diplomas. VOCAL members placed across our host sites serve as tutors, volunteer coordinators, workshop facilitators, and job search coaches, and are also involved with community outreach and volunteer engagement activities. VOCAL endeavors to increase the literacy and employability skills of 1,200+ economically-disadvantaged adults.
