Be A Volunteer Hero!

We have all wanted to be superheroes at one point in life; wished we possessed the ability to save the world; somehow obtained super human strength, or were able to fly. Superheroes have become embedded in our culture, with their logos and faces everywhere, and they are continuously depicted in a variety of scenarios (most ending in a huge mess!).

We grew up with them in cartoons, followed them in television shows, and still rush to theaters to see their latest mission. Most possess a unique super power or ability: whether it’s stunning laser-vision, super speed, or even the power to fly. Some, like Superman, may have a job by day while others, like Batman, are wealthy and hang in their hideouts awaiting the signal. There are a variety of things that make one stand out from the other. Some are women and feel protecting the world is their duty, like the female hero (or “shero”) Wonder Woman, and her Lasso of Truth. Others found other reasons to save the world from villains.

There have been many characters that our society has deemed ‘superheroes’. Yet those who aren’t invented characters at all, who are very much alive, and who still wish to change the world for the better are hidden in the shadows. The people who have the most in common with superheroes aren’t on a mission to gain wealth, but to make a change. Those who choose a cause and set forth to see it through; those who are     expecting nothing more than to bring a smile to a face; those hidden superheroes are………VOLUNTEERS!

Yes! Like superheroes, volunteers share a common motivation: to make a difference in their community. They deserve recognition but don’t ask for a pat on the back. Volunteers don’t wear capes or masks. Most can’t fly, see through walls, or hold up a building. Yet they make a difference  every day. Volunteers seek out a need and they work to make a change. Their missions don’t leave a wake of destruction; in fact they may be the ones cleaning up after the disaster. Their will to change is invaluable to the world. Their efforts save communities money, their mission forces change, and their impact often lasts a lifetime.

So if you ever wanted to be a superhero, the qualifications are easier than you think! Yes, I am saying all you have to do is volunteer! You don’t need a cape but if it fits, wear it! And like the Avengers or the  Fantastic Four, there are teams of heroes who are always looking for a new recruit!
