Benjamin Kagan

Benjamin Kagan is a student at Duke University studying Political Science. Originally from Chicago, Benjamin has been a Serve Illinois Commissioner since 2022. At Duke, Benjamin serves as a Senator for Durham and Community Affairs within Duke Student Government, is a member of the Dean of Students Advisory Board, and is involved with TEDxDuke, The Alexander Hamilton Society and a number of other student organizations.


Benjamin has expertise in local policy, and has worked as a Policy Intern at the United States Conference of Mayors. Additionally, Benjamin supported the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago serving both as a member of the Youth Advisory Council and as an Asset Manager. From 2022-2024 he helped lead the Chicago Mayor's Youth Commission as Chair of Public Health. In high school, Benjamin served as a United States Senate Page sponsored by Senator Tammy Duckworth.

In February 2021, Benjamin founded the Chicago Vaccine Angels, a group of 50+ adult volunteers working to get vaccine appointments for healthcare professionals, senior citizens, and essential workers. Benjamin and his team directly booked COVID-19 vaccine appointments for more than 10,000 individuals at a time when the demand for shots far exceeded the supply. He also ran a Facebook group with more than 95,000 members, where people shared and received COVID-related information and tips.
